Electricity storage technology is the most important support for the new
energy industry, and Tesla, which produces the affordable electric vehicle model
3, is now the most eye-catching and actively developing battery technology.
Tesla and Panasonic's super factories plan to become emerging industries that
create a large number of job opportunities in the United States and are
preparing to expand globally. However, in fact, China is the largest battery
manufacturing country in the future, and production capacity will far exceed
Tesla's super factories.
According to reports, the newly built battery factories by Chinese
companies will collectively produce at least 120GWh of lithium batteries by the
year 2021, which is enough to provide 1.5 million Model S or 1.37 million Toyota
Prius plug-in hybrid electric vehicles a year. After the completion of Tesla's
super battery factory in 2018, it can produce up to 35GWh of lithium batteries
annually.
In the past, smartphones, laptops, and other personal electronic devices
have already used lithium batteries, but the demand for lithium batteries is
only about to explode. Not only are electric vehicles needed, but power
companies will also install giant storage systems to store wind and solar
energy. Tesla produced nearly 84000 electric vehicles last year and is expected
to produce 500000 units in 2018.
The Chinese government attaches great importance to the battery industry
and is trying to gain market dominance. Currently, about 55% of global lithium
battery production comes from China, while the United States only accounts for
10%. By 2021, it is expected that China's market share will grow to 65%. The
main driving force is still government policies, and the Chinese government
regards the lithium battery industry as an important national strategy for
2020.
From a global perspective, the global battery capacity will double from the
current 103GWh to 273GWh in 2021, which is a huge business opportunity that
China has long been eyeing. Three years ago, Tesla's super factory plan sounded
the horn for global battery manufacturing competition, and China made every
effort to develop.
Tesla plans to announce the location of four additional factories by 2017,
one of which will be in Shanghai. Although few Chinese companies can achieve the
production scale of Tesla, although China lacks leading battery giants, many
small and medium-sized enterprises in China are enough to occupy the market,
including dozens such as Ampere Technology and Tianjin Lishen.
At the beginning of this year, the Chinese government announced its
intention to integrate battery manufacturers and promote mature industrial
development. At the same time, the Chinese government plans to put 5 million
electric vehicles on highways by 2020. The report believes that the ambitious
development of electric vehicles by the Chinese government is mainly due to the
increasing pressure of severe pollution in cities such as Baoding, Xingtai, and
Shijiazhuang. The second reason is to create a domestic market for Chinese
battery manufacturers, and to establish a foothold before they can compete in
the global market.
