There are five common reasons lithium-ion batteries explode

  1. The negative electrode capacity of lithium-ion batteries is insufficient. When the negative capacity of the positive part of the lithium-ion battery is insufficient, lithium atoms cannot be inserted into the interlayer structure of the negative graphite during charging, and will precipitate on the surface of the negative electrode to form crystals. In lithium-ion batteries, long-term crystallization can cause a short circuit. At this point, the battery will discharge sharply, generating a lot of heat and burning the diaphragm. The high temperature will break down the electrolyte into gases. When the pressure gets too high, the battery explodes

  2, when the water content is too high, water will react with lithium to form lithium oxide, resulting in the loss of battery capacity, easy to overcharge the battery and produce gas. Water decomposition voltage is low, easy to decompose when charging gas. When this series of gases will increase the internal pressure of the battery, when the battery housing can not withstand, the battery will explode

  3, internal short circuit internal battery short circuit leads to large current discharge, produce a lot of heat, burn the diaphragm, and lead to a larger short circuit, which will decompose the electrolyte into gas. If the internal pressure is too high, the battery will explode

  4. When the overcharging core of lithium ion battery is overcharged, the excessive release of positive lithium will change the structure of the positive electrode, and it is easy for too much lithium to be inserted into the negative electrode, which will easily lead to lithium precipitation on the surface of the negative electrode. In addition, when the voltage reaches above 4.5V, the electrolyte breaks down and produces a large amount of gas. All of which could lead to an explosion

  5. External short circuit External short circuit may be caused by wrong connection of positive and negative poles. Due to external short circuit, the battery discharge current is high, which will heat the battery. High temperatures can shrink or completely damage the diaphragm inside the battery, causing internal short circuits and explosions.
